Welcome to Direct English Online UNIT 14

In Unit 14, the Conversation section consists of a video and dialogs which present and develop the video drama storyline. The purpose of the dialogs is to introduce the new language forms you will be learning and enable you to experience real English in real situations and explanations of any new language items are provided in easily recognisable drop down boxes.

You will find that a systematic and methodical approach to your study will maximize your ability to understand and utilize the new language.

The Language Study and Practice section gives you the opportunity to practice the language from the Conversation or Presentation section in new contexts. Clear instructions and guides are given to help explain what to do and Language Notes give you detailed information about grammar and usage.

Always follow the lessons and exercises in order.

LESSON 1: WHERE? ANSWERED BY DIRECTIONS
In this lesson you’re going to learn how to:

  • ask / say where various services can be obtained, including: passport renewal, car rental, shopping, changing money, going to concerts, sending packages, sightseeing, etc.

and you will revise:

  • saying how you can get to a place (e.g. by bus, etc.)
  • giving simple directions

LESSON 2: WHEN? USING TIME DURATIONS
In this lesson you’re going to learn how to:

  • ask / say how long something took you (ranging from short-term activities like checking out of a hotel to long-term activities like learning a foreign language)
  • ask / say when an action will be completed (ranging from short-term activities like calling someone to long-term activities like finishing a company survey)

LESSON 3: DESCRIPTIONS: WHAT PEOPLE USED TO DO
In this lesson you’re going to learn how to:

  • ask people what their job used to be
  • report to someone else what people used to do for a living

and you will revise:

  • asking / saying what people do for a living
