Welcome to Direct English Online UNIT 27
In Unit 27, the Conversation section consists of a video and dialogs which present and develop the video drama storyline. The purpose of the dialogs is to introduce the new language forms you will be learning and enable you to experience real English in real situations and explanations of any new language items are provided in easily recognisable drop down boxes.
You will find that a systematic and methodical approach to your study will maximize your ability to understand and utilize the new language.
The Language Study and Practice section gives you the opportunity to practice the language from the Conversation or Presentation section in new contexts. Clear instructions and guides are given to help explain what to do and Language Notes give you detailed information about grammar and usage.

LESSON 1: LIKES AND DISLIKES
In this lesson you’re going to learn to express approval and / or disapproval of different aspects of:
- employment, with reference to unemployment, government job creation, training
- inflation, with reference to savings, government policy on interest rates
- trade, with reference to taxes on imports
LESSON 2: WANTS AND NEEDS
In this lesson you’re going to learn how to use some and any compounds and practice them when buying presents:
- buying a ring
- buying earrings
- buying a fountain pen
LESSON 3: ACTIONS
In this lesson you’re going to practice:
- reporting someone’s spoken words using the simple present form of modal verbs
- reporting someone’s spoken words using the simple past form of modal verbs
- reporting a series of connected statements
