Welcome to Direct English Online UNIT 8
In Unit 8, the Conversation section consists of a video and dialogs which present and develop the video drama storyline. The purpose of the dialogs is to introduce the new language forms you will be learning and enable you to experience real English in real situations and explanations of any new language items are provided in easily recognisable drop down boxes.
You will find that a systematic and methodical approach to your study will maximize your ability to understand and utilize the new language.
The Language Study and Practice section gives you the opportunity to practice the language from the Conversation or Presentation section in new contexts. Clear instructions and guides are given to help explain what to do and Language Notes give you detailed information about grammar and usage.

LESSON 1: WHERE? ASKING FOR AND GIVING DIRECTIONS
In this lesson you’re going to learn how to:
- ask where places and things are
- use prepositions to say where places and things are
- ask and tell someone how you can get to a particular place
LESSON 2: WHEN? AND HOW LONG?
In this lesson you’re going to learn how to:
- ask and say when places open and close and how long they are open
- make a flight reservation with reference to departure and arrival and length of flight
- make a hotel reservation with reference to dates and length of stay
- book tickets for the theater
and you will revise:
- polite requests, dates, times, spelling names, etc.
LESSON 3: DESCRIPTIONS: WHO THINGS BELONG TO
In this lesson you’re going to learn how to:
- ask Whose is it? and Whose are they?
- say who things belong to using the verb belong to and possessive ’s
- claim something you have lost from the lost and found by giving a description of it
- identify a dish you have ordered in a restaurant by giving a description of it
and will revise:
- saying what things are made of and what they are like
